Life Coaching For Parents on Self Awareness
Most parents think that there is something wrong with their kids. Little did we know that it is the way we think, the way we behave, the way we communicate with our kids that is the cause of the way they respond or react toward us.
Life Coaching is about shifting your mindset to think differently. Improving the way we think will lead to the way we feel, to the way we behave and to get the result we want. The first step is to become aware of our thoughts. Let’s take a typical scenario of a child and a parent.
Self-Awareness
Assuming you are the parent who found your child trying to shift a vase from the writing desk to another table and broke the vase. You raised your voice and shouted, “Why are you so clumsy?” Can’t you do anything right? The child was already frightened and feeling guilty. The next time you see her holding something delicate, unconsciously and out of good intention you started to warn her, “Don’t drop it!” Don’t be clumsy like the last time.
Thoughts Create Feelings
As you said that to her and bring that incident up to remind her, you are bringing the past into the future. In your mind, your thinking is, “She may drop it or break it.” That was a trigger you had in your mind. The trigger created the thoughts that affect your feelings. Feelings of anxiety and concern. Your anxiety causes you to raise your voice like before. It’s a chain reaction.
You thought that you were doing the right thing. Probably thinking that you are teaching her to be careful. Think of what you said. The words you used to teach her, your tone of your voice, your facial expression. How aware are you of your body language?
From your overall body language, your child can only assume and pick up your negative energy very quickly. The likelihood of what your child’s thoughts would be, “She is angry with me, she hates me, she don’t love me, why is she picking on me?” Your child is receiving the negative energy and might react negatively to you too.
